Who’s In Charge Here?: Negotiating Power and Authority With Teens

Networking Workshop Series for Jewish Youth Professionals
As adolescents develop and begin to exercise new critical thinking capacities and social skills, educators and youth professionals must think differently about what it means to “lead” or “advise” Jewish youth. But investing teens with power and authority in a program or classroom can result in anarchy and inaction as easily as it can promote growth and learning. In this session, we’ll examine some existing models of power-sharing in programs for adolescents (including Ma’yan’s Research Training Internship), and we’ll consider the challenges as well as the benefits of framing ourselves as partners in our work with teens.
