Ik
The Wind · Day Sign 2 of 20
Who Is Ik?
You are a communicator and a breath of fresh air. The Maya saw Wind as the divine breath of life — you carry ideas, inspiration, and change wherever you go. Your mind is quick and your spirit restless. Ik people are natural teachers, speakers, and agents of change who can't help but spread new ideas.
In the Tzolk'in — the sacred 260-day calendar of the Maya — Ik is the 2th of twenty day signs, each representing a fundamental archetype of human experience. Your day sign is determined by the day you were born, and it shapes your personality, your purpose, and the cosmic energy you carry through life.
Ik is associated with the North direction, the element of Air, and the color White. In the Maya cosmological system, these associations connect you to specific natural forces, seasonal energies, and spiritual qualities.

Ik in History & Archaeology
The Classic Glyph
The Ik glyph is the distinctive T-shaped symbol — one of the most recognizable in all of Maya epigraphy — representing wind, breath, and the vital spirit.
Archaeological Record
The T-shaped Ik glyph is among the most frequently carved symbols in the Maya world. It appears as architectural windows and doorways at Palenque, where the Palace tower features T-shaped wind openings. At Copán, Structure 22A (the "Wind Palace") incorporates Ik symbols into its facade, allowing the building itself to become a cosmological representation of the breath of the divine. The glyph also commonly appears on jade pectorals placed over the mouths of deceased rulers, symbolizing the continuation of the breath-spirit.
Cosmological Significance
Ik represents the divine breath (ik') — the life force itself. In the Popol Vuh, the god Huracán ("Heart of Sky") is a wind deity who participates in creation through speech and breath. The Maya understanding of wind as both physical air and spiritual communication mirrors the Latin "spiritus" — wind and spirit are the same word. Bishop Diego de Landa recorded that the Maya associated this day with sudden death, as the wind was believed capable of "snatching away" the life-breath.

Your day sign is only half of your Tzolk'in identity. The other half is your tone number — a number from 1 to 13 that modifies and refines the energy of your sign. If your sign is what you are, your tone is how you express it.
