Who Is Chuen?
You are creative, clever, and irresistibly playful. The Monkey was the patron of artists and scribes — you have a gift for weaving art, humor, and intelligence into everything you touch. Chuen people make the world more colorful, interesting, and fun.
In the Tzolk'in — the sacred 260-day calendar of the Maya — Chuen is the 11th of twenty day signs, each representing a fundamental archetype of human experience. Your day sign is determined by the day you were born, and it shapes your personality, your purpose, and the cosmic energy you carry through life.
Chuen is associated with the West direction, the element of Earth, and the color Blue. In the Maya cosmological system, these associations connect you to specific natural forces, seasonal energies, and spiritual qualities.

Chuen in History & Archaeology
The Classic Glyph
The Chuen glyph depicts a monkey's face — specifically the howler monkey, patron of scribes, artists, and the creative arts in Classic Maya culture.
Archaeological Record
The Monkey Scribes (Hun Batz and Hun Chouen) are among the most beloved characters in Maya mythology. The Popol Vuh tells how the Hero Twins transformed their jealous older half-brothers into howler monkeys — but rather than a punishment, this transformation elevated them as patrons of the arts. Classic-period painted ceramics frequently depict monkey scribes holding brushes and codices, often in elite workshop settings. At Copán, the "Scribe's Tomb" (Burial XXXVII-4) contained the tools of a royal scribe alongside monkey imagery, confirming the association between Chuen and artistic mastery.
Cosmological Significance
In K'iche' Maya communities today, B'atz' is considered one of the most auspicious and powerful day signs. Barbara Tedlock documented that the "head of the year" ceremony — the most important calendrical ritual — is performed on the day 8 B'atz'. New daykeepers are initiated on B'atz' days, and new weavings are begun, making this sign the literal "thread" that binds time, art, and spiritual practice. The monkey's association with thread and weaving connects it to the Maya understanding of time itself as a woven fabric — each day a thread in the cosmic textile.
