The deer was one of the principal game animals of the Maya lowlands and central to both subsistence and ritual. Deer bones and antlers appear in elite tombs as offerings. The Bonampak murals (c. 790 AD) — the most complete surviving Maya wall paintings — depict royal hunting scenes that were not mere sport but ritual enactments connecting the ruler to the forest spirits.
